The Historic St. Martin's Episcopal Church is chock full of local history!

Nestled in the trees on Rt. 113 Southbound,  and so close to  the very spot where Rt. 589 meets Rt. 113,  just outside of Ocean Pines,  you will find St. Martin's Episcopal Church.   Building the Church took 7 years to complete.  From 1756 until 1763, construction was truly a labor of love.

The Church is a Flemish bond brick structure that served as what was called a "chapel of ease" in the Colonial era here in Worcester County.   Hardly any changes have been made to the exterior since the 1700's.  The interior had some updates done during the 1800's.  One was an Alter change after an early 1800's push to revitalize the Episcopal Churches all over Maryland.

Over time, Church attendance at St. Martins diminished and services were replaced with special yearly gatherings in the late 1800's.  In 1824, the Church ultimately closed and was used only sporadically.   A new Church was built in Berlin in 1824.

During the 1970's, it was more than apparent that the Church was in a serious state of disrepair.  Tours and visits for the public stopped because of the risk caused by the poor condition of the building.  Now there is a Foundation Group that was formed in 1993 and they have organized restoration projects in two Phases.  Phase 1 is for exterior & structural  restoration and Phase 2 is dedicated to the interior restoration.

With so much local History right there, the wonderful people involved with the projects of the restoration have taken it upon themselves to keep the past alive.  A big "Thank You" to the Board of Directors and everyone who puts forth their time with this effort.  What a wonderful way to keep the beauty and memory of this Historic Church in the public eye!
